Site Issue: The Greatest Outage Risk Is Trapped Guests and an Overwhelmed Front Desk
Hotels often say: “We do not need every elevator in normal service, but we must at least bring people safely to the lobby.” This reveals two risks: guests can be stranded or trapped, and reception and security may lack a defined emergency operating plan.
Elevators have significant starting demand and high operational responsibility. Rated power alone can underestimate the effect of starting on the generator, cables, breakers and ATS.
Configuration Review: Elevator Count, Function and Recovery Sequence
Assess guest, service, fire-service, parking and banquet-floor elevators separately. Define whether all cars run, units rotate or only one or two evacuation elevators remain available after an outage.
- Elevator count, rated power, starting methods, controller locations and served floors.
- Fire-service elevators, accessibility requirements, underground parking and banquet-floor peak demand.
- ATS transfer time, test records, manual bypass and elevator rescue procedures.
- Coordination among elevators, lighting, reception, security and public-address systems.
Why This Design: Elevators Must Evacuate, Remain Manageable and Avoid Overload
Hotel projects should not automatically place every elevator in the immediate backup tier. A more reliable approach defines priority cars, recovery order and operating limits, using time separation, grouping or delayed loading where needed to reduce starting demand.
Generator design must account for elevator starting transients, simultaneous priority loads, breaker selection and voltage-frequency stability. ATS testing should go beyond unloaded transfer and include regular drills with elevator control logic.
