After many commercial backup-power upgrades, teams can only confirm that common areas have power. They cannot show whether the fire-alarm panel, sprinkler pumps, smoke-exhaust fans, surveillance, public address, access control and emergency lighting are all on protected circuits. In a real outage, incomplete recovery turns an operating loss into a safety and liability issue.

Life-safety loads are not necessarily the largest; they must be testable, traceable and assigned to a clear responsibility boundary. Engineers need to review distribution circuits, control logic and inspection records together.

Confirm whether fire and security systems have dedicated circuits, whether the ATS covers them, whether panels are clearly labeled, and whether the latest transfer test recorded the status of the fire panel, pumps, public address and lighting.

  • Load list for the fire-alarm panel, sprinkler pumps, smoke-exhaust fans and fire-service elevators.
  • Circuits for surveillance, access control, public address, emergency lighting and telecom rooms.

Why This Design: Life-Safety Loads Have Priority, but Starting Demand Must Be Controlled

Fire pumps, smoke-exhaust fans and elevators can impose high starting demand. If they recover with refrigeration, cooling and lighting, generator frequency can dip or breakers can trip. The design therefore needs explicit life-safety priorities and delayed load steps.

Fire protection, security, emergency lighting, public address and critical access control should receive immediate backup. Parking ventilation, selected lighting and priority telecom systems can recover by zone; decorative lighting, comfort cooling and normal tenant loads can be delayed. This protects both safety and generator stability during takeover.
