Site Issue: The Lights Are On, but Reception Cannot Operate and Security Has No Visibility
During an outage, reception is most exposed when systems fail: the PMS is unavailable, payments stop, key cards cannot be encoded, access control drops and CCTV screens go dark. The more guests gather, the harder the site becomes to manage.
These IT and low-voltage loads draw modest power but depend on a complex chain of UPS units, core networks, servers, lock systems, switches, security servers and payment terminals. Labeling them simply as “low voltage” is not sufficient for engineering review.
Configuration Review: The UPS Transfer Window for IT and Security Systems
Confirm that UPS runtime covers the complete sequence from utility loss through generator start, ATS transfer and network recovery. If UPS batteries have degraded, even a reliable generator may not take over in time.
- Inventory of PMS, payments, door locks, access control, CCTV, public address and core network systems.
- UPS capacity, runtime, battery condition and maintenance records for IT and security systems.
- Power sources for IT-room cooling, network racks, switches and servers.
- Reception operating procedures, night-shift coverage, alarm notification and remote-monitoring requirements.
Why This Design: The UPS Bridges the Transfer Window Before the Generator Takes Over
Reception and security systems cannot normally wait for the generator to stabilize before recovery. The UPS bridges the short interval and the generator supplies the extended outage. Review UPS health, ATS transfer time, distribution circuits and end-to-end remote alarms.
If IT-room cooling also depends on backup power, room temperature must be included in the plan. During a long outage, servers may remain powered yet still trip protection or destabilize the network as temperature rises.
