Site Issue: Racks Stayed Online, but Rising Temperature Put the System at Risk
Data centers sometimes focus on UPS and IT loads while overlooking cooling. If precision cooling, pumps and fans do not recover promptly, rising temperature can trigger derating, alarms or shutdown even while racks remain powered.
Cooling loads are often large, have significant starting demand and depend on ambient conditions, rack density and thermal inertia. They cannot be treated as simple auxiliary loads.
Configuration Review: Heat Load and Allowable Temperature-Rise Time
Confirm rack density, IT load, cooling type, redundancy architecture and temperature targets before deciding which cooling equipment must transfer with IT.
- List of precision cooling units, chilled-water pumps, cooling towers, fans and controls.
- Cooling-system type, equipment ratings, starting method and VFD or soft-start status.
- Rack count, IT load, temperature and humidity requirements, and allowable temperature-rise window.
- BMS and monitoring systems, temperature alarms, high-temperature history and test records.
Why This Design: Cooling Can Recover in Stages, but It Cannot Be Omitted
Cooling can transfer in stages by priority and starting demand: protect critical-room precision cooling and essential pumps first, then restore redundant units as capacity allows. This protects IT without starting all cooling equipment at once.
Document delayed loading, start sequence, temperature monitoring and alarm notification. Load testing must include cooling coordination, not only simulated IT load.

- Whether cooling-coordination testing, remote monitoring and periodic reporting are required.
