Trace Rack Power Loss Through ATS/STS, Distribution, PDU and Dual Paths
When the data center generator starts but a rack loses power, the genset is often not the cause. A fault in the ATS/STS, maintenance bypass, switchboard, RPP, PDU, breakers, dual feeds or final circuits can remove power from only part of the facility.
Probable Causes
Generator Power Does Not Mean Every Rack Circuit Has Power
Power passes through multiple transfer and distribution stages before reaching a rack. A local breaker trip, PDU alarm, incorrect bypass state or mismatched dual paths can leave the main supply healthy while a rack is de-energized.
ATS/STS Determines the Transfer Path
A failed transfer, incorrect bypass state or unresolved alarm can prevent downstream distribution from receiving stable power.
Low-Voltage Distribution and the PDU Can Fail Locally
A trip at the switchboard, RPP, PDU or rack breaker can cause localized power loss.
Dual Feeds Require Real Verification
A/B paths shown on drawings do not prove that the actual load is operating through redundant paths.

Engineers Inspect from Transfer Equipment to the Rack

Confirm the outage scope, rack numbers, A/B path status, PDU alarms and load impact.

Check generator, ATS/STS, maintenance bypass, low-voltage switchboards, RPP and breaker status.

Compare the single-line diagram with the actual circuit to locate the fault in transfer, distribution, PDU or rack-side equipment.

After recovery, record the de-energized path and redundancy failure point for corrective action and retesting.
When an On-Site Inspection Is Required
These Conditions Require On-Site Inspection, Not Remote Observation Alone
- A rack, PDU, RPP or low-voltage switchboard has localized power loss or repeated trips.
- ATS/STS, maintenance bypass or dual-feed status cannot be confirmed remotely.
- The fault affects IT-load redundancy or the SLA and requires safe isolation and on-site testing.
Prevention and Maintenance
To Find Problems Before an Outage, Every Inspection Must Be Recorded and Reviewable
Preventive Checks
- Regularly verify the complete chain through ATS/STS, low-voltage switchboards, RPP, PDU and rack endpoints.
- Verify status after maintenance-bypass operation so no bypass risk is left behind.
- Recheck A/B load allocation after expansion or rack relocation.
Maintenance Routine
- Fault records must include rack, PDU, A/B path, breaker location and recovery time.
- Inspect transfer equipment, low-voltage switchboards, PDU alarms and hot circuits together.
- After recovery, retest to prove dual-feed redundancy rather than only confirming that power is present.
Engineering Recommendation
Data center power problems must be traced to the rack. Looking only at the generator misses localized distribution and redundancy risks that directly affect the SLA.
